In Ottawa County, health care corporations are fighting for who should build and operate a nursing home. Officials will take a look at proposals received by February.

A battle is brewing over what health care corporation is best suited to build and operate a long-term nursing facility in Ottawa County.

The state’s Certificate of Need Commission has revised the “bed need standards,” recalculating the number of nursing home and hospital long-term beds for each county. The newly adopted standard indicates that Ottawa County needs 70 nursing home beds over what either currently exist or have been given approval to construct.

In Minnesota, a nursing home resident had to endure a cold trip in 17-degree weather without a coat. No citations were made because the home took immediate corrective action.

The Minnesota Department of Health has substantiated a complaint against a Maplewood nursing home for sending a resident out to a doctor’s appointment last month without a coat, hat or gloves.

The resident was sent for the appointment on the Metro Mobility transportation service on a day when the temperature was just 17 degrees, according to a state report made public Thursday.

But the health department said it would not issue any federal deficiencies or state licensing orders in the matter because the facility — Maplewood Care Center — has taken appropriate corrective action.

“Immediate education was provided to the involved staff … and an educational memo was posted for all staff on the unit to read the following day regarding the availability of extra warm clothing in the recreation office,” the state report says.
